Tips for working out in a busy gym

Sept. 16, 2022
  • Be patient and don’t rush. Unfortunately, a busy gym means machines/weights are probably going to be taken. You can still get a good workout even with extra time between exercises. Don’t rush through your sets and make sure to push hard during your reps. Try to plan your workout so you are moving around as little as possible to avoid waiting!

  • Ask people how many sets they have left or if you can work in with them. Since machines/weights will be taken, don’t be shy to ask someone “How many sets do you have left?” If they say 1 or 2, you know that it won’t be long before you can use it (& it kind of solidifies your spot in line for the machine). If they answer 3 or 4, you can ask “Could I work in with you?” and the majority of the time people will say yes! And then you don’t have to wait anymore :)

  • Find a balance between blocking out everyone but also being aware of where you are. This can be a tricky thing to master, but it’s the best way to handle a busy gym. By blocking everyone out you can get in the zone and have a good workout. By being aware of where you are, you are less likely to run into people/be in people’s way. Just take a mindful approach to your presence in the gym and a crowded gym doesn’t have to be so scary!

  • Go at non-peak hours. I know this isn’t possible for everyone but if you can go to the gym before 5pm, you are less likely to run into the “after work” crowd.
